Identified problem and the solution provided by the project

Macular degeneration (MD) is the main cause of blindness for the people from the developed countries; it is characterized by the progressive degenerative and irreversible changes of the central retina area (macula). Since it affects more than 5% of the people aged 65+, it is a matter of social interest, which calls for investigations to find a natural cure to alleviate this problem.

The studies conducted so far have shown that the dry DM is receptive to the administration of nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. Carotenoids are substances that act as antioxidants and stimulators of the immune function; lutein and zeaxanthin are major carotenoids from the eye macula. Egg yolk is a matrix consisting of digestible lipids, cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids; it also contains xanthophylls (lutein and zeaxanthin) dispersed within the matrix next to other nutrients such as liposoluble vitamins. The lipid matrix of the egg yolk is a source of nutrients and the lutein and zeaxanthin from it have a higher bioavailability than the plant sources.

The projects aims to develop eggs enriched naturally in carotenoids (mainly lutein and zeaxanthin) which may help preventing the onset of DM. This new type of functional food is to be produced by SC Avicola Lumina SA (SME). This type of functional food already has a market of its own, as shown by the market analysis conducted within the business plan. In Romanian there is no patent for the production of eggs enriched in carotenoids yet; the only patent that we identified so far for eggs enriched in lutein was obtained by Kaw et al (USA, 2010, nr. 7758884 B2), this carotenoid being extracted from marigolds

Project objectives:

Production and promotion on the Romanian market of a rather cheap and safe functional food: eggs enriched naturally in carotenoids (lutein and zeaxanthin).

Diversification of production and better competitiveness of the SME coordinating the project (SC Avicola Lumina SA) on the egg market in Romania, by producing a new line of eggs with improved feeding qualities (enriched in lutein and zeaxanthin) and, implicitly, with vivid colour of the yolk due to the two pigments.

Valorisation of plant materials and by-products from food industry, which are of low economic interest, as alternative to the imported synthetic carotenoids currently used by the compound feed manufacturers.

Development and testing innovative and integrative feeding solutions for poultry, by including plant material/by-products discarded by the food industry into layer diets, with the purpose to obtain eggs with feeding qualities that promote human health.

Production of functional foods, eggs naturally enriched in lutein and zeaxanthin, using animal friendly procedures and technologies in agreement with consumer and environment safety.

Production of sustainable foods by increasing the impact of the knowledge produced by scientific research on the production of foods beneficial for human health in terms of costs and public health.
